Scamming the Patriarchy: A Youth Summit, New Museum, 2016
Acknowledging that schools, museums, community centers, and other learning environments exist within, rather than apart from, the power structures of the world at large, how might teachers actively create a safer climate in which to challenge these structures together with students? This workshop will focus on deepening our understanding of the intersections of gender, sexuality, race, and class. We will discuss approaches for proactively creating a space that honors, supports, and empowers students and educators. We ask that teachers bring challenges and strategies to share. We will begin our discussion with a presentation in the morning by Sonia Choi and Kamilah White, who consider these topics central to their work as artists, teachers, and organizers. We will continue with smaller group activities in the afternoon session.
This event is free to attend, but RSVP is limited and required. Please email schoolandteen@newmuseum.org indicating whether you will attend only the a.m. session or both a.m. and p.m. sessions.
