The New Museum invites its Corporate Members and their employees to view “NYC 1993: Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star” while the Museum is closed to the public. Featuring over seventy-five artists and spanning all five gallery floors of the Museum, “NYC 1993” provides a synchronic panorama in which established artists and emerging figures of the time are presented alongside the work of authors whose influence has since faded from the discussion. A cultural turning point both nationally and globally, the social and economic landscape of the time served as both the background and source material for these artists, whose works reflect the intersection between art and the world at large that defined the 1990s and continues to shape artistic expression today, addressing issues such as globalism, new technology, and identity politics. Twenty years later, we reconsider the events, debates, and histories that prompted these dramatic changes in art and culture.
