Oftentimes we think of a portrait as a picture of ourselves or our family or friends. But a portrait can also be a sculpture, the mark our body leaves behind, words on a paper, or even a simple drawing. Through portraits, we can share who we want to be and how we want to be remembered. They can reveal our most private secrets and tell strangers our most dramatic stories. Discover how artists in “NYC 1993: Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star,” such as Janine Antoni, Lina Bertucci, Devon Dikeou, Félix González-Torres, Alex Bag, Sadie Benning, and Gillian Wearing, explore ideas of portraiture. Then head up to the New Museum Sky Room and discover new methods to create portraits of people important to you.
New Museum First Saturdays for Families are free of charge. This program is designed and recommended for families with children aged between four and fifteen years, and includes free New Museum admission for up to two adults per family. Children under eighteen are always admitted free. No preregistration is required. Space is limited and tickets are given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Your entire party must be present; tickets will not be given to partial parties.
