Andrej Ujhazy, Untitled, 2015. Photoshop painting
Organized by Rhizome’s Artistic Director, Michael Connor, Brushes convenes artists Laura Brothers and Andrej Ujhazy, art historian Alex Bacon, and others to explore digital painting as a practice for screen-based display and online circulation, against the backdrop of a current surge of interest in digital painting for the gallery. This panel will consider the browser as a context for circulation and display through a discussion of its formal possibilities, from moiré screen effects to parallax scrolling to moving image loops, as well as the social possibilities afforded by digital networks.
This event is presented on the occasion of the online exhibition “Brushes,” copresented by Rhizome and the New Museum as part of First Look: New Art Online.
Rhizome’s public programs are made possible, in part, through the support of the Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts, the Carolyn K. Tribe Foundation, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and the New York State Council on the Arts.
Major support for First Look is provided by the Neeson / Edlis Artist Commissions Fund.
Additional support is provided by the New York State Council on the Arts and the Toby Devan Lewis Emerging Artists Exhibitions Fund.
