Presented in conjunction with Chekhov (Thinking of you): Half Straddle in Residence.
Half Straddle is a contemporary performance group currently in residence at the New Museum. They make plays and performances with music—with lyrics by playwright Tina Satter and music by composer Chris Giarmo. In anticipation of the New York premiere of Half Straddle’s Seagull (Thinking of You), tonight’s concert presents a selection of interpretations of music from various Half Straddle shows, performed by members of the Half Straddle company and backed by a live band. Giarmo’s compositions juxtapose plaintive vocals and piano-based pop with short, repetitive samples programmed into propulsive, rhythmic loops, while Satter’s lyrics combine willfully awkward non sequiturs with accessible and slyly subversive themes of innocent longing and defiant alienation.
This program is made possible, in part, through the support of the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
Education and public programs are made possible by a generous grant from Goldman Sachs Gives at the recommendation of David and Hermine Heller.
