New Perspectives Tour: Systematic Suspension

This New Perspectives tour will focus on works by artist Hans Haacke that consider what it means to be suspended or in suspension. Using unusually simple arrangements of distilled water, clear acrylic, fans, and silk fabrics, Haacke’s kinetic sculptures allow us to think about other systems that require objects to be distilled, isolated, manipulated, and displayed. Together, we will confront the problems of an object’s “natural state” and how Haacke’s delicate systems question what it means to be natural in the first place, asking: What processes and conditions are necessary for an object to not only be suspended but also to maintain this unstable position?
New Perspectives tours are led by a New Museum Teaching Fellow, an emerging scholar in art history or a related field. The topics of the tours are based on the Fellow’s ongoing research and change monthly, engaging participants in uniquely focused examinations of selected objects and installations. Troizel Carr, one of the current New Museum Teaching Fellows, is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Performance Studies at New York University, where his research questions the (im)possibility of black childhood through fairy tales and black children’s figurations in post-emancipation art and literature.
